Unitil Finalizes Acquisition of Two New Hampshire Water Utilities
Unitil Corporation has closed its purchase of two Aquarion water companies in New Hampshire, completing a deal first announced in May 2025.
Utility holding company Unitil Corporation (NYSE: UTL) just wrapped up a deal that's been in the works for over a year. The Hampton, New Hampshire-based company officially completed the purchase of Aquarion Water Company of New Hampshire and Abenaki Water Co. from the Aquarion Water Authority, the company announced June 30, 2026.
The original Stock Purchase Agreement was first announced back on May 6, 2025, but the deal didn't stay exactly as drafted. The agreement was amended along the way — most notably to narrow the scope so that Unitil would only be picking up these two specific water companies rather than a broader package of assets.

Before the deal could close, Unitil had to clear some important regulatory hurdles. Both the New Hampshire Public Utilities Commission and the Maine Public Utilities Commission needed to sign off on the transaction, and the company confirmed that all required approvals were materially in place by the closing date. Regulatory green lights like these are standard in utility deals, since water and energy companies operate under close government oversight to protect ratepayers.
For Unitil, this acquisition marks a meaningful expansion beyond its traditional electric and gas utility footprint. Adding water service operations in New Hampshire diversifies the company's portfolio and could open new revenue streams — though exactly how the companies will be integrated and what it means for customers hasn't been spelled out publicly yet. Investors watching small-cap utility stocks will likely keep an eye on how Unitil manages this transition into water services.
