Costco is entering the health insurance game, letting members shop Medicare Advantage plans alongside bulk goods.
You can already grab a rotisserie chicken and a 48-pack of paper towels at Costco — and soon, you might be able to pick up your Medicare Advantage plan there too. The warehouse giant is the latest big consumer brand to wade into the health insurance market, bringing a familiar shopping experience to what is often a confusing open-enrollment process for seniors.
Medicare Advantage, for the uninitiated, is the private-sector alternative to traditional government Medicare. Instead of the government paying your medical bills directly, you enroll in a plan run by a private insurer — think UnitedHealth or Humana — that bundles your coverage, often including dental and vision perks that standard Medicare doesn't cover. The trade-off is that you're typically locked into a network of doctors and facilities.

Costco's entry into this space makes a certain kind of sense when you think about their membership base. The club's shoppers skew older and are exactly the demographic approaching Medicare eligibility. If you already trust Costco with your eyeglasses, your pharmacy, and even your auto insurance, handing them your health plan search isn't much of a leap. The brand essentially becomes a one-stop shop for the retirement lifestyle.
This move is part of a broader trend of consumer-facing retailers and brands trying to simplify the notoriously complicated Medicare enrollment experience. Whether Costco can actually cut through the noise — or just add another option to an already overwhelming marketplace — remains to be seen. But if there's a Kirkland Signature health plan in the cards someday, honestly, would anyone be surprised?
